Points and Awards

With the Points and Awards program, the SMR is pleased to encourage and award any activity undertaken with an SMR registered horse. You can accumulate points by entering shows, taking part in parades, competitions of any kind, trail rides, endurance rides, and even ranch work. But you have to be in it to win it! Pick the program(s) that a right for your horse and sign up!

Program Descriptions

  • Definition: This award is given for promoting Spanish Mustangs by participation in group rides, which may be organized within a neighborhood, or by various equestrian groups.

  • Definition: Distance trail rides judged within mandated time limits on natural terrain and points being based on the physical condition, behavior, etc. of the horse before, during and after completion of the ride by ride officials.

  • Definition: This award is given to acknowledge the accomplishments for the Spanish Mustang as a working or using horse. Examples: packing, riding fence, cattle drives, and roundups, use as a lesson horse, marking trails for competitive/endurance rides, etc.

  • Definition: Long Distance rides over natural terrain running against time and other horses entered in the ride. Two categories are recognized by the AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference). Limited Distance (LD) 25 – 49 miles and Endurance 50+ miles.

  • Definition: A horse ridden in gymkhana and playday events with the outcome determined by electronic timer or other means of timing and/or elimination. These are not judged events. Examples are, keyhole race, barrel race, pole bending, flag race, etc.

  • Definition: This award is given for promoting Spanish Mustangs by participation in Parades, exhibitions, demonstrations, clinics, and public relations activities such as school field trips, visits to retirement centers, etc.

  • Definition: The Mileage Program is designed to recognize those Registered Spanish Mustangs that travel over miles of distance and trails for pleasure or conditioning. These rides/drives may be solo or with other horses.

  • Definition: A horse shown in classes that have levels of difficulty such as dressage, jumping, combined training events, reining, trail obstacle classes, etc. Typically horses perform solo in a ring, arena or cross country course. Bonus points are based on the level of difficulty or performance.

  • Definition: A horse used in working events such as steer wrestling, roping (single or team), cutting, team penning, goat tying, etc. Generally, if cattle or other livestock are involved, the class is considered a Rodeo event.

  • Definition: A horse shown competitively with other horses and places determined by a judge. Typically, these are arena or ring events with several competitors in the ring at the same time. Examples are English and Western Pleasure, halter classes, etc.
